Honeymoon on the Island of Hawaii
One of my most favorite places to go is the Big Island Hawaii
I was thinking out our older days of travel and our honeymoon came to mind. So I wanted to share.
My wife and I went to the Hawaii, Big Island as it’s known, on our honeymoon and loved it.
We flew out of San Francisco, at the time we were still living in the Bay Area, and landed in Honolulu. From there, we took another flight over to Kona on the Big Island. When we made our descent into Kona, all we could see were lava rocks out of the window on the plane.
It looked like we were going to land right in the middle of them, and we did (the runway was actually carved right into a lava rock field).
The Kona airport was like none I had ever seen before. All of the buildings were like Tiki huts and most of the airport was actually outdoors. We picked up our luggage and proceeded to the car rental desk.
Rental Cars – Big Island Hawaii
The island is big. And if you want to do day trips I highly recommend renting a car so that you have some freedom in your schedule.
We reserved a compact, but they had a special on convertible Camaros so we took advantage of that.
We drove down the highway right along the ocean, it was so spectacular.
We stayed in Kona at the King Kamehameha’s Kona Beach Hotel. The hotel was right on the beach and we had a beautiful view out of our window. The waves were crashing and we could smell the sweet smell of the ocean.

The hotel featured a Luau which was awesome! We had so much fun, forgot to take pictures.
Of course the food was great and the entertainment was very cool. The hotel was close to shopping and restaurants.
The Hard Rock Café was right across the street which we had to stop in for burgers and beer.
We also visited Hilo Hattie’s which had all kinds of Hawaii souvenirs and clothing. We picked up some key rings to give to our friends and family and I got an awesome Hawaiian shirt which I still have to this day.
During the week, we made several trips to locations on the island. Everything from snorkeling, hiking, hiking, hot tubbing, swimming and so much more.
Our first trip was to a beach down the coast from Kona where we went snorkeling. However, I must warn you that you need to be careful as there are lava rocks scattered under the water which hurt if you collide with them. The waves pushed us into a few of them and we got some cuts on our legs. Below shows where we entered the water. All the black rock is lava and its sharp.
Our second trip took us to the other side of the island where we visited Akaka Falls, a beautiful sight. This is listed as one of our favorites on our Big Island Hawaii best hikes click here
We had to hike a bit to get the best view, but I can tell you it is one of the most beautiful sights on Earth.
We would recommend spending a night in a hotel on the other side of Hawaii so that you can adventure and hike there without rushing through the day. It’s a long drive, worth it to plan ahead for the days you want to hike and adventure.
Akaka Falls – Big Island Hawaii
On the way back to Kona, we drove across the middle of the island. It is quite a contrast as the middle is like a high desert and we were told it can snow up there.
Finally, we took a trip to Kapoho Tide Pools. (Unfortunately it was covered by lava in 2018 there are some on the big island to visit )
It was very relaxing to sit in a natural hot tub while looking out over the ocean. Driving there from Kona required driving past the lava fields on the South side of the island, which was also a beautiful sight to see.
For the remainder of our trip, we relaxed and enjoyed the warm weather and ocean near our hotel nestled on one of the many Big Island Hawaii beaches
On our next trip to Hawaii, we are planning on visiting a different island, but eventually we will make our way back to Kona to explore some more. We want to travel with teenagers to see how they will enjoy it as well.
I can tell you we learned a lot from that trip and the next trip we will schedule in a few more things and the last few days will be relaxing on the beach again.
