First things first, choose a cheese for your Charcuterie Board
Getting started you should choose the charcuterie cheese first. I like to start with the cheese because it helps me to be able to choose the next flavors of the board.
I want to break down what cheese goes with charcuterie. However, there are so many varieties of cheese, so please do not get hung up on picking the exact cheese for your board.

Some of the best cheeses for charcuterie are going to be soft cheese, hard cheese, smelly cheese, cubed cheese, and round cheese.
Choosing this variety will help to make your charcuterie cheese look more appealing to the eye and will also help to distinguish the different flavors on the board.

How Do You Arrange A Charcuterie Board?
The most important thing to keep in mind when making a cheese and charcuterie board is to put large groups of ingredients together.
This way when you look at the charcuterie cheese board, you immediately notice big groups of grapes, olives, and cheese.
Next, you will want to fill in the gaps with fillers. But remember to keep main ingredients (cheeses, fruits, crackers, meats) in large groups.
A neat trick to make it simple, is to make a fist. Main ingredients should be no smaller than your fist.
You want your cheese board to look abundant! If your cheese board doesn’t look great, it is probably too empty. Start by adding one more main ingredient and one filler.
How To Make A Charcuterie Board for Halloween
First, place a few small bowls and mini pumpkins evenly around your cheeseboard
The exact number you need will vary but when placed together, they should take up about 1/4 of your board.
Add your cheeses to your Halloween board. Again, spread them out over the board filling in any holes around the bowls and pumpkins.
Add your largest bunch of fresh fruit and dried fruit i in the center. Add 2-3 more smaller piles of fruit around the board.
Next, add your crackers and sliced baguette. Try to form “c” or “s” shaped curves with your crackers.
This will help create a flow that will carry your eyes around the board.
Now add your cured meats to fill in the remaining spaces of your large gaps.
Add fillers to the bowls and gaps until the board is almost completely covered. If you see a hole, add more fillers! There is no right or wrong place to put fillers.
To finish off this Halloween snack board, let’s make it Halloween! Adding candy eyeballs and fake spiders can help take the cheese board from cute to creepy!
What Cheese Goes With Charcuterie?
Brie, Havarti, and Mozzarella are cheeses that both kids and adults love so they’re always a safe bet for a cheese board.
As an appetizer, I expect an adult to eat between 1/4 and 1/3 of a pound of cheese.
So for a party of 10, I would buy 2.5-3 pounds of cheese divided evenly between my cheeses; I would buy 1 pound of brie, 1 pound of Havarti, and 1 pound of mozzarella.
If you do not want to use Havarti, you can use Cheddar. It is a great substitute.
What Else Goes On A Charcuterie And Cheese Board?
Fruits
You can really use any fruits that you have on hand. Strawberries, figs, pears, apples, and plums are all great fruits to add to a cheese board. The possibilities are endless.
Meats
As an appetizer, I plan for adults to eat a little less than 1/4 pound of cured meat.
So, for a party of 10 I would buy 2 pounds of cured meats divided evenly between the two types: 1 pound of prosciutto and 1 pound of salami.
Crackers
You can use any kind of crackers you like: You can make your own homemade sourdough crackers. Ritz, Water Crackers, Triscuits, Wheat Thins, etc.
For a party of 10, I would buy 1 baguette and 1 box of crackers. You’ll likely have leftovers but it is better to have too much than not enough.
Fillers
This is where you can add your favorite garnishes. I’ve suggested a few but feel free to pull anything you have in your pantry or fridge.
You can use any jams, mustards, pretzels, nuts, etc.
The exact amount of filler you add to the board is not the important part.
You are using the filler to fill empty areas so that your board doesn’t look empty.
How Do You Say Charcuterie Board?
Every single time I say charcuterie it changes. It’s like trying to say Worcestershire Sauce for me. My tongue just can’t do what my brain is telling it to do.
So, in case you are like me, here is the correct way to say charcuterie: (pronounced “shahr-ku-tuh-ree”)
What Should Be On A Charcuterie Platter?
You will want to choose various cheeses, cheese knife or a couple of cheese knives depending on the size of your board, fresh fruit, serving utensils, different textures and decorative items. All of these items go into making the perfect themed cheese board
- Cured Meat
- Cheese (goat cheese, blue cheese, any type of creamy cheese or hard cheeses that you like)
- Fruit
- Jelly or Jam
- Crackers and/or Bread
- Olives (black olives or green) and/ or Pickles
- Nuts and/or Seeds
How Long Can A Charcuterie Board Sit Out?
I do not like to test the fate of my stomach. I never leave a cheese charcuterie board out for more than a couple of hours. The longest I have gone is three hours, but I recommend two hours max.
